FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you teach children?
Yes. Currently we teach as young as 4-years old.
Can parents sit in on lessons?
Of course! Parents are always welcome in their child's lessons and we encourage it in fact, as you'll be able to know what your child needs to practice and for how long when they get home.
I've never sung before. Can you teach me?
Yes. We've taken many beginners who've never sung in their lives and brought them up to speed. You can too.
People tell me I can't sing. Should I even try lessons?
Yes! Learning to sing is a DEVELOPED skill. Even people who are "born with the talent" learned it from somewhere, even if they didn't take lessons. Just like learning a sport or exercising in the gym there are certain muscles you must DEVELOP and become skilled in using. ANYONE can learn to sing. But if you never try, you never will.
Why are your rates so good?
We recognize that Santa Cruz isn't Los Angeles, New York or San Francisco. We cater to a majority of recreational singers in Santa Cruz and our rates reflect that. Although if you want to go pro and get into the big industry of it all we know exactly how to get you there.
What genres do you teach?
We teach many styles, including: Classical, Pop, Indie, Rock, Soft Rock, Punk, Americana, Country, Musical Theatre, Do-wop, Blues, Singer/Songwriter, Coffee-house, bluegrass, etc. If you know of a style that's not here, yes we teach that too.
Who is the teacher?
The teachers name is Miles Alden. He's been teaching all ages and genres for many years and he will be your personal voice coach.
How often are the lessons?
Lessons are ideally once every week. However, we like to be flexible so we'll work out the best schedule for you.
Do I have to practice?
Yes. You most definitely will need to practice. Your vocal coach will give you the exercises you will need to do, and the more you do them and sing your songs, the better you will be. At Santa Cruz Singers we will teach you the REAL secret of practicing, and why some people just never get better!
What do I bring to my lesson?
You should bring the music you want to learn/work on in the form of a CD, IPod, sheet music, chord chart, fake books, etc. These are all fine, but remember to bring more than one song - preferably three. If you play your songs on guitar or the like, bring it. A piano is in the studio as well.
What forms of payment does Santa Cruz Singers accept?
Currently we only accept cash or check. Make checks payable to Santa Cruz Singers.
Where are you located?
We are located in the Santa Cruz Arts Center, at 1001 Center Street in Downtown Santa Cruz, Studio B. Please send any mail to our administrative location at: 235 Union Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
Is there an age limit?
Definitely not. Our oldest student is 67 years old!
...So I've got this friend who could really use your help. What can you do?
We quite often are referred people by their friends who know they need lessons, but who won't take the plunge. Yes, we can help them. Give us the number or email and we'll get in touch with them, or have them email us.
I think I should get one of your packages, but which one is best for me?
For most people the Starter Package of 5 lessons is a pretty good way to get going - however, the best deal by far is the Killer-Deal Package. At an almost 20% discount you get 10 lessons for only $370. The Killer-Deal Package is the one I recommend the most.
Do you teach groups?
Most definitely. Helping a group of singers become tight on their harmonies and performances is something we do quite well and often.
Can I record with you?
Yes. Many songs have been written, arranged and recorded with Santa Cruz Singers, both in studio and at live performances.
